Overview:
Overview
Introduced in 2490 by General Mechanics, the YellowJacket was intended as a newer, more
capable design to
supplement to the older Wasp.
While a solid design, sales did not perform as well as General Mechanics had hoped. The
mech, while more
expensive, was superior to both the Wasp and Stinger, but the others already had a large
customer base.
In 2492, General Mechanics revised the design in hopes of increasing sales. The center torso
had a minor
redesign to replace the 1-ton machine gun ammunition bin with a half ton bin and a second
machine gun. The
entire assembly line was converted to the newer 0W model
Capabilities:
The original YEL-1J production design had more firepower than the Wasp or the competing
Stinger, with no loss
in manuverabilty. Most notable, however, was the substantial incrase in armor protection.
The Yellowjacket had
80% more armor than either the Wasp or Stinger, drastically increasing it's survivability.
The Yellowjacket had
enough armor to withstand an AC-10 hit to any undamaged location on the front facing without
the section
being destroyed (barring a lucky critical hit).
The mech had ten heat sinks. Under normal operation, this was enough, although the pilot
would build heat if
he continually used maximum jumping capabilites with both lasers.
The newer YEL-0W model had even better firepower although ammunition could become a problem
on
extended campaigns.
Variants:
Variants
The original YEL-1J still is active, although many have been stripped for parts to service
the YEL-OW models.
The only other major variant is the YEL-1F, which replaces the machine guns entirely with a
flamer in the center
torso and a small laser in the head. Pilots must be careful to manage the increased heat
generation of this
model.
