BattleMech: UrbanMech UM-R60
Rating: 3.50
Comment: I have to rate this one much higher than it deserves because it's just so colorful. It really can handle mechs it's own size with ease and can absorb a lot of damage (for a 30 tonner). But it's definitely overspecialized and completely useless in an offensive role.
As a side story, my proudest Battletech moment must be taking down a Cauldron-Born with a lone Urbie. Bless his stumpy little legs, but that little fella managed to jump out of a blazing forest fire (thank you 11th heat sink!) and DFA a clan omni more than twice his size. It doesn't pay to underestimate the Trashcan of Doom!

BattleMech: Catapult CPLT-A1
Rating: 3.00
Comment: This is actually pretty good for large formations; with the JJ's you can always find a good firing perch and you'll have lancemates to pummel anyone who gets close. It has enough firepower to pull it's own weight in a large-scale battle, but there are plenty of Archer variants that can beat this into the ground.
On the other hand, the psychological effect of a mech with no short-range weapons can certainly work to it's advantage, making it a low-priority target. And it makes for very interesting duels (remember, you _can_ hit with LRM's at close range, it's just harder).

BattleMech: Blackjack BJ-1
Rating: 4.00
Comment: Somehow this beautiful mech is always underestimated, even though it's short range arsenal is more powerful than most mechs it's size. The jump jets keep it out of harm's way, it has plenty of armor and heat dissipation, and you do _not_ want to take partial cover againt it. There's nothing like salvaging a nearly mint assault mech whose pilot was killed by AC/2's!

BattleMech: JagerMech JM6-S
Rating: 3.00
Comment: I have to admit, this mech looks terrible on paper and I used to avoid it like the plague. However- this mech is fantanstic for fire support in large scale battles. Super heavy armor isn't as important in Lvl 1 as it becomes later, and this mech can happily sit in a blazing forest without overheating and hit anyone on the map. It's definitely a team player, but it has a niche and fills it well.

BattleMech: Banshee II
Rating: 3.00
Comment: This is a nice, straight upgrade of the original Banshee. It has minor, but useful, improvements in all systems, without changing the basic character of the mech. This really feels like a Banshee, but with much better short-range guns.
Unfortunately, it suffers from the same problem as the original: the 41 ton engine. This means that it's essentially a very heavily armored 65 ton mech. Still, if used as a heavy mech rather than an assault, it should be tough opponent against other Star League mechs.

BattleMech: Typhoon TPN-1A
Rating: 4.00
Comment: This is an excellent general purpose mech. It has good (but not overwhelming) firepower at all ranges, combined with near-maximum armor and good speed and heat dissipation. Any level 1 force would be happy to have this mech in their arsenal, but it's perfect for a Periphery state that can't afford to invest in overspecialized units.

BattleMech: Odin GZT-ODN-2R
Rating: 3.00
Comment: I personally feel that this mech is better than the Thunder Hawk. Sure, it loses one Gauss, but the Large Lasers add more punch at medium range, and gives something to fight with after 16 turns- Gauss ammo is easier to deplete than many people think.
This is also a lot cheaper and more durable than the Thunder Hawk (and most other 100 ton Gauss platforms). It may still have explosive Gauss Rifles in the torsos, but at least a critical hit to them doesn't automatically destroy the mech.

BattleMech: UrbanMech IIC
Rating: 2.50
Comment: Actually, a clanner assigned to this mech has an excellent chance of gaining honor IF his city or outpost is attacked. Most clan light mechs are much more fragile than this mech, and city terrain will help negate their maneuverability and movement modifiers- their main advantages over this mech.
Although almost as slow as the original (and thus useless outside of a defensive role), this mech has the range and the firepower to bring down other light mechs with ease.

BattleMech: Vagabond VGB-1
Rating: 3.50
Comment: Well, the design certainly has an interesting history, but despite it's low-tech origins it's actually quite good, resembling nothing so much as an upgraded Daimyo. Given that the farmers didn't have CASE availible, placing the SRM ammo in the arm makes perfect sense.
The major worry I would have is the rather light armor covering the torsos, exacerbated by the XL engine.

BattleMech: Night Gyr C
Rating: 3.00
Comment: This design isn't as bad as it may look at first glance. It's an excellent sniper, although it's firepower is a bit light. The accuracy and range help make up for this. However, most enemies will attempt to close with this variant as quickly as possible.

That's where the TC really comes in handy. Ultra AC-2's are great, but often unexpected, crit seekers when aiming at a specific location. 3 Ultra AC'2s with a TC can work the same as an SRM-6. That is, a SRM-6 that puts every missile in the location you want.

Still, the design requires an excellent gunner and a fair amount of skill to use correctly, so it doesn't rate much better than average.
