Comment: I gave this novel a 4.0 for a number of reasons. First, it gives an excellent account of horrors and absolute destruction of the battle of Tuyyakid (sic). The recollection of these events by the main character allowed the reader to not only become an observer to these battles, but also created empathy toward Mr. Rose. Second reason, is the actual plot to the story. I found that the author was able to capture the Post-Clan Invasion period quite well (or at least how I would imagine it to be). The duel with Wolf's Dragoons was an interesting side story, but not really necessary. Thirdly, the actual combat experienced by the Thorns was well written. For the most part, I was able to follow the action with building excitement. A good writer should be able to put the reader in the cockpit and allow him/her to see, hear and feel the action. A good example is the death of the Stinger (I think), piloted by Mr. Rose's cousin. The brutal finality of his death was well captured Overall, this sense of being in the action was achieved for the most part, although at a few points the reader had to take a leap of faith.

The real problem I have is with the end result, the large haul of Clan mechs and technology. In my opinion, this was a far too convenient ending to the story. (a bad case of the fluff). I feel that the end could have been handled a little better. So many good novels lose it in the last couple of chapters as the writer hurries to finish.

This however, does not take away from the fact that generally, this is one of the better Battletech books, especially post 3050. I weould recommend this novel to any who have not read it or those looking to experience a bit of Battletech.

Comment: This was the third Btech book I bought when I returned from overseas. The concept fascinated me and at the time I thought that this was a great depiction of the how Battletech should be fought. That was many years ago...

And now for the review:

Generally, it is a well written book with captivating action sequences ( especially during the last third of the book). The plot is well thought out and the characters are quite developed. I found that the authors continuous use of scenery to be very effective in allowing the reader to picture what it would e like on Trellwan.

On the technical side, the author did justice to the various mechs involved in this book. The major complaint ( and it is fluff) is that the jumpship/dropship references were confusing. This author tried (but failed in my opinion) to differentiate between the two, but the result was that of confusion. You really needed a knowledge of Battletech to understand that there was difference and what it was. Additionally, the author seems to overplayed the power of the medium laser and the might of a light mech(again I must remember that this is fluff).

That being said, I enjoyed reading this book again and must list it among the top ten Btech books. It is definitely one of my favorites.

Comment: Overall, this novel is well written having to work wit hthe general DA storyline. I do have a couple of minor issues. The first is character development. The main character is farily well developed, however, the supporting cast range from cookie-cutter mold type characters to ones where some effort and imagination was used. The second issue is the pace of the novel. I can"t put my finger on it, but it seems like the author was given a page or word limit.

Otherwise, the battle sequences were pretty good. There was a hint of the "stuff" found in the older novels in this one.
