Excellent mech with a few minor nigglings. The mech has a LOT of armor, but poor allocation and, in truth, has more armro than it needs ... light mechs shouldn't be made to soak up damage so much as avoid it entirely. Taking off a half-ton of armor (Mostly from the legs and some head) wouldn't be noticeable, but would allow the replacement of the useless Small Laser with a *much* more useful Machine Gun, with a half-ton of ammo in the CT, or, failing that, a flamer. Some sort of anti-infantry weapon, at any rate, to give teh 'Goose that extra option. You won't even notive the weaker armor.
Speaking of which, thr basic armor allocation's a bit off as well. The rear armor, in particular, is *way* too low for what is, essentiall, a scout. The sides should be upped by 2, and the center by about 3. Yes, this is at a cost of the frontside armor, but, it makes the mech much more even.
Even in baseform, tho, the mech is *good*, with excellent stats, great mission fufillment, and it even 'feels' right, with the even weight distribution of weapons. Top notch old bean!

Hermes HER-1A |
Rating: |
3.50 |
Comment: |
Very efficient, very effective, but very boring.
The poor Hermes suffers from 'Modern Juice', without any weapons on their to give it flavor.
Given my druthers, I'd go with the ML in the RA, another in the CT, and a flamer in the LA, in a bit of love for the Hermes II.
Effective, but dull. I'd expect to see it in many a tournament, but it's toast-dry for campaigns and RP.

I can't supoprt this one.
Yeah, it's fast, and yeah, it's amazingly well armed, but ... 24 points of armor? Mein Gott!
Teh campaign lifespan of this poor thing isn't good at *all*. What happens when you get deployed to a snowy world where you have to slug it slooow on foot? Or when in a jungle or urban environment when infantry ambushes are common? You got *nothing*, and teh Hermes is going to drag you down.
With teh HUGE engine and Gyro, the Hermes is also a mech far more expensive than you'd think. You're just better off picking up a Locust for nearly the same speed, but vastly more useful and surviveable.

BattleMech: |
Spider SDR-5K |
Rating: |

Undergunned and under-armored for the size, the urban Spider, here, is about the best of all teh Spider variants.
The big switch is to cut the MG ammo in half, using that half-ton for more armor. At that point, you have an astonishingly nimble mech with great anti-infantry capability, able to stalk any city at any speed, with a medium laser for extra firepower against mechs.
Still don't like the CT location for the laser, as it's, again, a non-intuitive fire location, but, overall, well done.

Spider SDR-5V |

Bland but effective, the classic Spider suffers from the odd CT placement of the weapons, but has unmatched speed and agility. Phenominal scout and harassment mech, but way, way expensive. Better for House units than mercenaries.
The lack of an ejection system is a problem that gets serious when you realize how little armor the pider really has. While there's no Mech it can't get away from, the Spider suffers from pilot turnover, which is BAD for a scout.
In a campaign, the Spider's going to be left out of a lot of missions, as it's too valuable to risk. The gyro alone's worth more than some mechs!

Javelin JVN-10N |
Rating: |

An excellent design for what it is, teh Javelin still has issues... teh lack of a secondary weapon system, for example, is always the big problem.
Used as it should, the Javelin is sneaky and *deadly*, easily able to mess up a mech up to twice it's size. It's actually *poor* at fighting other light mechs, because the limited ammunition supplies will run out before it can score enough hits on a jumpy lil' lightweight to make it feel it. The Jav is much, much better as a medium mech hunter, waiting for an opening to dash in and blast someone right when they can least absorb it.
Great finishing mech, to set after the wounded while your line mechs switch to a new target.
To make for a happy puppy, degrade the racks from SRM-6 to SRM-4, which gives you ample ammo for a small reduction in firepower, and add a medium laser to either arm. Just like that, you've got a *dangerous* little mech.

One of the best mission-specific designs, ever. I'd pull the extra heat sink out (Why on Earth does it have 11?) and upgrade the Small Laser to a Machine Gun or two. That gives it even more urban defense power, like it didn't have enough.
The Rubbermade Brigade is still one of teh best things going, and every major Liao city needs a lance of these lil' guys trotting around.

The loss of armor, significant range, and half the ammunition all combine to too great a price for the increase in damage that an AC-20 brings.
Urbanmechs are fantastic, but this one's not quite up to the level it should be.

Valkyrie VLK-QA |

Strictly average, I wonder how Davion got so huge when this is a good example of their more common designs. The Valkyrie is a medium mech shrunk down to a light size. At 40 tons, the same speed and agility can be reached, armor improved, and more firepower added.
The Val's too slow for a light, and under-armed (Aside from the LRM) for teh tonnage. The LRM isn't reliable enough to make it worth all the exchanges.
On the positive side, it *is* cheap, and the smallest missile boat out there. This gives it some tactical options that no other House has.
Overall, tho? Nothing special.

Poor variant indeed. Switching the only secondary weapon (The medium laser) for a support weapon (Flamer) makes no sense. What kind of mission can this be a superior layout for?
Madness.
