Overview:
    For centuries, the BattleMaster was an acknowledged king of the battlefield. Still, despite
    this reputation, given it by its impressive short-range firepower and thickly armored hide,
    it was also widely acknowledged that the design had some glaring flaws. Foremost amongst
    this being a lack of effective long-range firepower. While its PPC was a solid hitter, it
    was the only weapon that could reach out past 270 meters. Therefore, some engineers began
    studying ways to improve the design.

Capabilities:
    The decline in technology during the Succession Wars meant that to find some way of
    improving the long range firepower of the BattleMaster would necessitate some compromise in
    another aspect of the design. The old adage of "firepower, armor, speed, take 2" still held
    true around a thousand years after it had first been stated. Therefore, the engineers
    decided the quickest change to free up needed tonnage would be to decrease the size of the
    fusion plant driving the machine. The speed decrease would be relatively minimal (after all,
    the Stalker and Atlas had gotten along with a 54 kph top speed for centuries), and could be
    somewhat mitigated by a series of jump jets that would allow the design to clear obstacles
    30 meters high or leap crevices 90 meters across.
    
    Making this change freed up enough tonnage to change out two of the forward medium 5 cm
    lasers for two large 8 cm lasers. Although these weapons do not have quite the range of the
    PPC, they do have much more range than the 5 cm lasers, as well as a harder punch. The two
    rear mounted 5 cm lasers were also dropped from the design to enable enough expansion of the
    heat sink system to alleviate most of the heat of the new weapons. There was even enough
    tonnage left over to slightly increase the leg armor, strengthening these to protect the
    'Mech from damage during its newly acquired jumps.

Deployment:
    The BattleMaster-1J has only recently come onto the battlefield as of 3025, and has yet to
    make its mark. Only time will tell if this model catches on with the various militaries
    around the Inner Sphere and Periphery realms.
