You've all heard of diceless roleplaying no doubt.

I have decided (because my d6s abandon me at conventions) to play BattleTech.....diceless. That is to say for me alone. You would all still have to roll. I however, will just arbitrarily decide whether I hit or not, crit or not, shutdown or not......you get the picture.

It will really make the game much more fun for all of us. Well.....at least me. I promise not to (cough, cough) play unfairly or have any bias towards my forces. Really you can trust me.

And just to make it "fair" for all you "doubters" and "whiners", I will promise to only use level one mechs...okay....will that make you happy?!

This reminds me of a funny story...

In a battle a few years ago at TotalCon Mordel and Hardware were playing, but both were sitting at another table. They'd both get up to move their mech, but then they'd return to their seats. For 4 turns Hardware would walk over during the fire phase, but Mordel declared his fire and rolled without getting up, yelling over his results every turn.

Every turn he yelled over he missed.

After turn 4 was over one of the players on the other side complained that Mordel was "cheating" because no one could witness his rolls. The fact Mordel had missed with everything for 4 turns apparently escaped him.

Mordel heard the discussion, shook his head, and smiled.

On Turn 5 when the weapons fire phase started Mordel stood up, rolled his to-hit on the table we were playing on, and promptly head capped they guy that complain.

All he said to the guy was "that's for making me get up", and then went over and sat down again.

Truly a classic TotalCon moment.

Great Story.

Here's mine.

I'm GMing Mechwarrior. During the final battle in the mechs, the players are getting handed easily, despite a couple high-profile flubs by the Governor of the planet.

They've been escorting a mech-warrior in a badly damaged Dragon, which only has a small laser left. They're fighting a Samuri (one of the customs on the board). One of the players asks if the other pilot will enter the fight.

"He's hurt, and his mech is falling apart, and he's at long range, and all he's got is a small-laser," I say. "Hey, it's a small laser more than we've got right now."

He can only hit on a 12, so I roll it out where everyone can see. 12. Hit location: 12. Pilot blacks out. Mech falls, lands on it's head. Governor skooshed.

That's happened two other times in games, in an event now known as the Battle of the NPCs, by the NPCs, for the fate of the NPC world!

I just love stories like that. They are what makes gaming worthwhile. Even if you are on the receiving end of the double 12s.
