Ok. I'm the party leader in an AD&D game. And we have run into a spirit that can unlock my powers as a fortuneteller. The price? One life of our party.

Well. In this party we have a bard with an intelligent weapon. It is a +3 great sword. That when being wielded. The wielder cannot be affected by confusion or charm spells. It's only draw back. Well. He talks. Allot. and he has a big mouth that shouts stuff like "ooohhh. Yeah baby. Let the hurting begin" or "OUCH, that must of hurt"

Now. This weapon whose name is Licor. Would be the life that the spirit needed. The problem. The bard must convince this self-centered sword to surrender his life. My question is. What would you tell him to get him to do so?

I wouldn't. I'd trick the damn thing. Our DM gave us a talking sword that annoyed the crap out of me. I hate talking swords.. especially egotistical ones. Let the spirit have it with honors.

Raven, hater of talking swords!

Killing the sword is a fore gone concluesion. But it has to be a life given willing. So. how do we convince the sword (who is being played by the GM) to lay down it's life for us?

Talking sword with big ego?
Sounds like my brother lol..JK
I would play up to it's ego. If your chutzpa is good you may convince it that it will be transferred to your body from the sword....what ego wouldn't like that to go where you will when you will....also if it's into fame imagine how it would react if you told it that it would live forever in the annals of history(BIG play up on it's part in it of course)...could try reverse psycology...no you wouldn't want to do that...would be beyond your abilities...lol..did that with an ogre...got through the door lol ogre's own door too..LOL

Tell the bard to convince the sword to do it...and then kill the bard while he's not looking and take the sword for yourself

Why would want the fortunetelling abilities any?? They are unreliable, confusing, they add hate and discontent in the Party, not to mention what if one of them was wrong and got someone killed, and emotionally painful.

Lose the sprit and put a silence spell on the sword.

again, not an option. To complete the game. I need to unlock those powers so we know what to do next.

Besides. The bard likes the sword.

Bards are arrogant, self-centered egotistical hacks.... They have to learn o fight to keep the customers at bay long enough to get paid and get out alive....

Not this one, His a 12th lvl bard. with one lvl fighter and one lvl monk. his perform skills are at 18. And his songs as pull our fats out of the fryer more then once. And with his song to boost our attacks and damage. He makes a good addition to the group.

Bards...I used to run AD&D a while ago but all my players scattered to the four winds years ago.
My brother had a bard once...his notes ended up flat. We had this encounter in a small city controlled by a mage. The mage's flunkies ended up casting 4 walls of stone and surrounding our group within them. After a brief conference the conclusion: We must knock one of these walls down to escape."
Well..my warrior, Gordar(int 4) took it to heart and charged one of the walls. after several painfull attempts he actually managed to get one tipping over. So the rest of the group tries to help push it over. All except my brother's bard. He stood back cause he didn't want to ruin his garb with the dirt on the wall and being kicked up by the group's efforts.
Well push came to shove and the one wall collapses outward and all the group members who were pushing on it fell in a heap on top of the fallen wall. However....with the wind that was kicking out of the storm the other three walls weren't as stable as they were. So one at a time they all collapsed inward...on to the poor bard....*SPLAT*x3
It cost 10 times as much to get some clerics to ressurrect the rolled up tin foil back into a bard. He was never able to carry anything other than a flat tune since.
