This is another mission I had, one of the "time to learn a hard lesson" variety.

Setting: 3025 era, right before the Clan invasion.

The party has a mix of light mechs, say a Valkyrie with some Wasps and/or Stingers.

Given this mix of light, fast machines, the party is sent into the enemy's flanks to stir things up.

Long story short, they blunder into a high-level enemy field commander in an Awesome. The enemy commander decided he wanted some glory for himself, wandered to where he thought the enemy was, got lost, and is now stranded without his escort.

If the players remember that they have the "Tactics / Mech" skill, I'll let them make a roll to see if anything comes to mind. As long as they get even a 6 or better, I'll remind them that the Awesome is slow and terrible at heat management.

Thus, if they make a full-on run for it while squealing on the target they can likely make a clean break, possibly with a group of Warrior VTOLs appearing to harass the Awesome from a safe distance.

If they use their jump jets to dance around the thing they can force an overheat (I will rule that the commander has a severe anger issue and so won't manage his heat properly) that will allow the Valkyrie to keep popping it with its LRM 10. If the party is smart enough to squeal during this, the Warriors will likewise show up to assist.

In either scenario, so long as the party has decent enough dice rolls, they'll win in some fashion... even if that "win" is them surviving with their mechs intact.

The only "lose" scenario is, essentially, if they attempt to go toe-to-toe.

Would this be a fair enough mission to put a low-level party up against?

Thanks.

The Awesome is not terrible at heat management.

The pilot in question is going to be running at full speed on a hot day (hot enough to, under the rules, assign a heat penalty) while doing alpha strikes. He's going to trip the shutdown at least a few times before the party gets away.

Your scenario is silly.

A "high-level field commander" that can't correctly pilot an Awesome would never have become a "high-level field commander", and someone with "a severe anger issue" wouldn't have become one either.

Go back to the drawing board, and come up with a logical scenario that doesn't require one side to be idiots to have an even battle.
