Overview
The Nova is the second attempt of Ilyushin-LGG to manufacture a space superiority fighter. The tiny odd shaped fighter is designed specifically for space manuvering, and many believe it would not fair well within an atmosphere. However, Admiral Chernova does not care about its atmospheric capability, only wishing to gain some ability to fight back against the overwhelming superiority of Aerospace fighters. The failure of the Decembrist has caused the Imperial Russian Space Defense Force to fall back on a tried and true concept: light, fast, dependable, and cheap. The small speedy and rugged Nova is more of a knee jerk reaction among design specialists then a well thought out strategy to counter the Aerospace fighter.
Capabilities
To begin with, the ILL-67 Nova is built for fast space deployment. Entrance is gained through an airlock in the back of the craft into a fairly cramped cockpit. The top mounted engine is similiar to the Leopard CV. Two stubby wings provide limited control surfaces for atmospheric manuvering, but the primary goal of this conventional fighter is to be able to be loaded and shot out of a carrier and into combat ready to fight. The other limitation is that the craft has no landing gear. It is litterely designed for space opperations and is incapable of ground take off.
However, its high speed, strong armor, and heavy armament makes the small tight craft hard to fight by even an aerospace fighter. The two nose mounted heavy machine guns, and armor heavy enough to withstand PPC fire give this fighter the ability to mount capable actions against aerospace fighters, provided that it has enough of its wingmates along to help.
Which is the other advantage. The relative availability of the Deve Series 175A Turbine, and the overall cheapness of the design allow it to be built in massive numbers. The only limitation is the capability of the Imperial Russian Space Defense Force to deploy the unit in large enough numbers. The main limitation is the lack of combat ready carrier dropships. Plans are in the work to address this loss, but dropships are highly expensive pieces of technology, and it is hard to see just how the Russians plan on addressing this problem.
Deployment
Currently over 60 Nova's are deployed on the Bryant moon, the low gravity allows catapult systems to launch whole wings in one volley. The vast number of fighters that are in patrol and on the surface at anyone time grants assured aerospace superiority to any light force. Whole new shipments are being prepared for launch to New Home.
