BattleMech: Gallowglas GAL-1GLS
Rating: 4.00
Comment: This is a favorite of mine in mercenary use. It makes for a good command mech that can help out in battle if necessary. No ammo to cook off and the heat sinks to keep firing at medium range makes it perfect for the cautious fighter. The MPLs may seem useless, but are quite good for the times someone rushes you with fast light/medium mechs.

I used it in a tournament once, but got destroyed by a Wraith. I'm sure I ripped the price of my GAL out of his hide, however :-)

BattleMech: Wraith TR1
Rating: 3.50
Comment: I'll second that: this is one dangerous machine when properly used. Move in, alpha strike, move out. Repeat as many times as necessary. It loses some points because of the vulnerable XL engine, though. Even with the heavy armor this mech is usually badly damaged if it tries going it alone.

BattleMech: Spector SPR-5F
Rating: 4.00
Comment: I rate this mech highly, not because of the guns but the combination of speed and ECM. Now I can get ECM where it's needed the most when fighting C3 companies. This is a mech made for supporting the rest of it's lance, not hunting alone.

BattleMech: Griffin GRF-3M
Rating: 3.50
Comment: I've used this mech several times, and it is good. It keeps that old Griffin feeling, even if the weapons have been upgraded. Sure, you could split the LRM-20 into smaller racks. Sure, it has too many heat sinks now that they're DHS. The ER PPC is still a nice gun on a nimble medium mech like this and will net you a few kills in large battles.

BattleMech: Thunderbolt TDR-7M
Rating: 4.50
Comment: I've seen this mech in use in tournaments and campaigns, and it was good. It keeps doing what a TDR is all about: getting up close and personal. Heavy armor, mixed weaponry and enough heat sinks to use a good amount of guns every round. A must if you're looking for a general purpose heavy mech that can't cost too much.

BattleMech: Dervish DV-7D
Rating: 4.00
Comment: This is a reasonably effective mech as long as you remember to stay in the support position. It's fast, jumps and carries 2 LRM 10s. Also 2 MLs and 2 SSRM-2s for close-range work. My only complaint is the fact it carries two tons of Streak ammo when it could use one for an extra ton of LRM ammo. Some specialty ammo would be nice for those special encounters.

BattleMech: Hatamoto-Chi HTM-27T
Rating: 5.00
Comment: The weapons may seem weak, but this is actually a very dangerous assault mech. It's reasonably fast and very tough, taking incredible amounts of damage before it stops. And there's nothing on it that's too sophisticated, since Endo Steel is the only advanced tech it carries. Simply walk toward the enemy and shoot him until he's down and can't get up. Then kick him.

BattleMech: Centurion CN9-D
Rating: 3.00
Comment: This mech is not as good as it could be. Someone decided to upgrade the engine but forgot to increase the armor protection. The weaponry is still strong, but it also has the speed to get in trouble far faster than before. Use it as a line filler in FedCom units, and always remember to run away from the enemy!

Moving the speed to 5/8 and incresing the armor would have been a better upgrade. The old versions were made for advancing slowly, this one must hang back from round one because of the XL engine coupled with thin armor.

BattleMech: Commando COM-2D
Rating: 4.00
Comment: A classic Steiner scout mech, this is a useful design. Fast enough for it's era, with a lot of punch if other light mechs try to bother it. The fact that it has two different SRM systems also allows it to carry different ammo. I like to have one launcher with Inferno ammo since it works so well in crippling 3025 mechs.

The only thing lacking is jump jets.

BattleMech: Jenner JR7-D
Rating: 4.00
Comment: One of the worst things that can happen to your scout lance is to meet some Jenners. These mechs move in like the wind, Alpha Strike you and run away. Few lights or mediums can do anything about it, except stand and deliver.

The only real drawback is the armor, which could be a lot thicker. Now the pilot must evaluate every hit and weigh his chances - not necessarily bad in a campaign, though.
