Hey all. I have a question and figured this was the place to ask. I'm going to be leaving for Air Force basic training, tech school, and OCS in a few weeks. My family is worried for my safety and they want to make sure I have the best gear possible.
My brother is going to try to get me a Pinnacle Armor vest (Dragonscale) and my sister wants to get me a top line pistol. Something that if I'm in a bad spot will save my butt.
Any suggestions?

The SIG-Sauer P226 pistol is extremely popular with servicemen, usually in the .357 SIG version.

Don't bother taking anything of your own... atleast for the first while, get used to being told what to do, what to wear, what you CAN and CANNOT have, etc...
After your first few courses, I don't know how pick the Americans are, but, for us, we can't use any weapons or things like that that the military didn't issue us with.

| I love my Springfield Armory XD in 40 s&w. I would recommend it to anyone. And it's under $500 too.

Well, the sort of top line pistol depends on your personal preference more than anything else. Do you like big, mean, man-stopper calibers like .45 ACP and 10mm Auto, or do you go for the lighter qualities of 9mm Para and .40 S&W (Comparatively speaking of course)?
If you like .45 ACP, I would recommend the Heckler and Koch USP45. Twelve shot magazine, strong action, damn near impossible to break or jamb. German engineering at its best.
As for calibers like .40 S&W or the .357 SIG, I am in agreement with Warhammer. SIG-Sauer is one of the best pistol manufacturers out there. However, instead of the 226 model, I would go with the P-229. It's smaller and more compact, so it won't get in the way and such when your working, but it doesn't sacrafice magazine capacity or accuracy.
Biggest problem here is that these top line pistols have top line prices. With either gun, your sister is looking at over a thousand dollars, but I've had time with both, and you certainly get what you pay for.
And I just realized I posted like a month too late. I feel very stupid now.

While being in no position to know personally anymore, I recall that the US Army and USAF tested the Dragonscale and turned it down.
Too many bullets penetrated it.
They still consider the Interceptor vest to be the best available.
As for weapons, I second what the others have said about waiting for what they issue you and what they tell you about other weapons. People my Dad's age have talked about bringing personal weapons to Vietnam, but I don't know any Iraq vets who have talked about non-issued weapons, excepting the guy who spent time building an SAS base and got to use their L85s.
Someone who knows can find the military's regs, but the Police Forces (Paducah, Lexington, and Springfield) I've worked with forbid high-power pistols as "back-ups weapons or boot pistols."
Cops around here are big fans of the Barretta and the Glock. Several of them cary "baby-glocks" as their back-up.

I think you are mistaken there on the topic of Dragon Scale armor. Reports that I've read, as well as seen on Futureweapons, states it took thirty rounds of 7.62mm Soviet AP rounds, sixty 9mm Para FMJ rounds, and thirty 5.56mm FMJ without penetration. Not to mention the point-blank grenade detonation, which also didn't penetrate.
But back on pistols, personally, I am a revolver man. My Uncle just bought me a Colt SAA from the custom factory for a birthday present (As soon as I turn 21, of course), and it is quite possibly the finest pistol I have ever laid hands on. Course, in a time of war or personal defense it wouldn't be the first choice for my sidearm. That belongs to my Dad's (And also mine when I turn 21) S&W Model 686 Magnum Plus.
Glocks are good pistols, but I just don't like the weightlessness of them. I feel like I am holding a toy, not a weapon. I need the heft of two or three pounds of steel in my hand to feel comfortable, and if worse comes to worse, I can pistol whip some bad guy with it. Really can't do it effectively with a Glock.
As for a backup or boot gun, that place belongs to my Uncle's Colt Detective Special, if I ever get my hands on it.
