Well, because the criteria said that we should make the Hollander fly and keep the full size Gauss rifle. What you see there is the Hollander chassis, with the exact copy of Hollander armour built with technologies available (barring the composite chassis, I wasn't sure whether it's really compatible). You have to get the tonnage freed for the conversion equipment and JJs. In addition you can't use XL, ES, or FF with that (F3 Hollander has both FF and ES). So unless you want to make the 'Mech bigger like the latter entries, you have to save the weight elsewhere - hence the small engine small cockpit and clan gauss was needed to keep everything within 35 tons of the original. Not thta the F3 is exactly a fast machine in the first place. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Clan Gauss gives 3 extra tons. Which is a ton. Well, 3 tons...

On average the LAM version is 10 tons heavier than the original version.

With this kind of armour you certainly don't want to arrive too early, but you can still move 5 maps per turn in aerofighter mode and 9/14 in air-mech mode, so seting up an ambush is certainly possible. LAMs are poor Aerospace fighters anyway, so I never really considered it to be used in aerospace mode for anything else than rapid relovation. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!
